Although a grant from the U. S. Government for the site of Tchula was given on November 11,1833 and presumably as settlers moved in, there were schools established of some sort. The history obtained for this information only records the first school in 1882, established in a house close to where the old Tchula Grocery Company stood. The schools were originally maintained by tuition. Next, just south of the old Tchula Depot about where the WWII Memorial now stands, was the second school which was moved in 1885 to the site of the present post office.\r\n<\/p>

\r\nIn 1892, the first public school was established and the trustees were able to get funds from the County\u2019s Board of Supervisors to build a school house and buy the desks. This small frame house was built near the location of the old Tom Sweet cotton gin. In the winter of 1893 the house was discovered to be in flames, the building and contents were a total loss. The next one-room school built was during the summer of 1894 and with several additions. It stood through 1919.\r\n<\/p>

\r\nThe school site as we all remember was secured in 1918 and a two story brick building was erected for the students of 1919-1920.\r\n<\/p>

\r\nIn 1922 Tchula Consolidated School District was organized and the Howard, Mileston, and Shackleford schools joined Tchula. During the winter of 1923 on Christmas Eve, the building and contents burned burned-a total loss. For the rest of the year (1924) the school was held in the City and Masonic Building.\r\n<\/p>

\r\nA bond issue for $40,000 was almost unanimously approved and sold at a premium and a contract was given to construct a modern building. During later years, Coxburg and Cruger schools were consolidated with Tchula High School. It is the school that so many of us attended, some beginning 1924 and succeeding years and some ending in 1966.\r\n<\/p>

\r\nThe brief excerpt was mostly \"lifted\" from The History of Tchula 1830-1954 provided by Mr. Frank Gwin and complied by Maury Shurlds. The book was written for the Tchula Business Club and Professional women's Club by Margaret Grafton Peaster. Most of the information was obtained from various sources, newspapers, and the Archives of the St of MS and Holmes County Courthouse records. A quote in the October, 1954 book,( initialed only as S. E. B.) said that it was always said:\r\n<\/p>

A Personal Note from Maury Shurlds, Math Teacher, Tchula High School 1951-1965.<\/p>\r\n\r\n

I grew up on a farm South of Tchula loving our town and its people. I spent twelve years at Tchula Consolidated Schools with so many great kids and wonderful teachers who prepared me for life. My college education was a direct result of this preparation. When I came back to Tchula in 1951,1 tried to give back to each student over the 14 years I taught there as much as they could stand, treated each one equally and loving all of them. When my family and I moved from Tchula in late August of 1965, we left part of our lives in our school and community. It will always be that way. But, then we made a new start, as so many of you have and we all through many \u201cups and downs\u201d have been successful.<\/p>\r\n\r\n

I have many good memories in my life-enough to last a lifetime, but the ones which \"kick started\" me are from Tchula. It will always be my home.<\/p>\r\n\r\n
